Advocating for Cannabis Reform in the Caribbean: A Journey of Education and Empowerment
As a fervent advocate for cannabis legalization, I dedicate my time to spreading awareness across the globe, including the picturesque Caribbean islands, through engaging radio talk shows. The sobering statistics from the Organization of American States reveal that 1.1 million individuals, roughly 4% of the region’s population aged 15 to 65, have consumed cannabis at least once in their lifetime. However, the journey towards legalization remains sluggish, with less than 20% of the Caribbean islands taking steps to legalize cannabis within their small island developing states.
On May 8th, I eagerly anticipate my one-on-one discussion with Dr. Simone Mathieu, PhD, a distinguished social scientist in the realms of psychology & adult education based in the USA.
Our conversation will delve into the evolution of cannabis criminalization into a thriving industry. Can Dominica, one of the Caribbean islands, still harness the potential benefits of the global cannabis industry?
These locally held dialogues serve as vital platforms for accelerating destigmatization and promoting responsible cannabis development within small island developing states. Together, we strive to normalize the conversation surrounding cannabis, empowering communities to embrace change and seize the opportunities presented by legalization.
As the date approaches, I am filled with hope and determination. Through education, advocacy, and collaborative efforts, we can pave the way towards a more inclusive and prosperous future for the Caribbean and beyond.
